Exterior Foundation Footing Drain
Some homes were built without footing drains or the drains are so badly deteriorated that they must be replaced. Generally this is accomplished by excavating a trench around the house to a depth below the elevation of the footings. A perforated drainpipe is installed on a drainage grade to a central collection point in the trench and covered with drain rock. At this time the basement walls can also be inspected for cracks and rock pockets. If cracks are found, a waterproof membrane can be applied after making any structural repairs to the cracks and rock pockets. This will prevent water seepage from weeping into your basement.
After any repairs are made, the trench is filled with drain rock and covered with a filter fabric to keep the soil from invading the drain and causing a future blockage. Cleanouts are also installed for maintenance and inspection of the footing drain system. The central collection point of the system is then connected to the storm sewer system.
